Millennial Skeuomorphism as UI

Reduced Scope for Piracy

Cloud is one of the most talked about thing in the world right now. From our memories to our work files, most of our items are being stored in the cloud each day.

Already, services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime exist, which stream movies directly to our computer screens without us needing to download and store any data on our physical systems.

Therefore, it’s only evident that gaming too is likely going to take the same direction shortly.

Nvidia and a few others are already toying with that idea and have been offering games that stream directly on your screens using only bare minimum resources from a user’s system, while for the most part, the game runs on rigs owned by the companies offering such services.

The benefit of doing it is that even a player with a low-end gaming rig would be able to play games that require insane amounts of processing power including higher-end graphics cards that support the kind of graphics that we see today.

However, that’s not all.

There are many more factors because of which I believe that sooner or later, physical disks and downloads will be a thing of the past.

The gaming industry loses billions of dollars in revenue due to piracy, and it’s a sad state of affairs.

A great game requires more than just graphics; there are a ton of people involved, including writers and sound designers who work their asses off to build a game that truly shines through.

When a game is pirated, it doesn’t just cost the developer much money in lost revenues; it also demotivates others from producing good quality games.

However, in the absence of physical disks and downloadable files; the scope of piracy would almost become next to nil.

With nothing to be downloaded on systems and the game being streamed directly, the only way to play a game is to subscribe to it.

Massive multiplayer games or MMO as they are commonly referred to are a hot favorite with gamers from all over the world.

It is because, unlike traditional games, MMO’s are an ever-expanding world and gives players true value for money.

Also, the fact that they are mostly free, except for in-game items that you may need to purchase for your character to become physically stronger or to move up a level, helps.

Even though, the games still need to be downloaded to play them. The decreasing size of storage units and increase in the amounts of data that can be stored on such systems means that shortly, it might very well be possible that players might no longer need to download any data whatsoever, and the game would entirely run on the cloud.

As mentioned earlier, the possibilities are unlimited. Imagine a world which never ends, stories that span through ages and locales around the globe.

These are some of the things which make cloud gaming the next logical step. Moreover, no matter how intense the graphics; stories are what drives a game.

When both writers and designers have unlimited scope to tell their stories without having to worry about limiting themselves concerning the world and its characters; it would usher in a whole new era in gaming.

Probably giving way to a brand new form of storytelling never before explored in gaming history.

Whatever the case, gaming on the cloud is not a gimmick but the next step in visual storytelling via games.

We need to wait, when developers either start deploying their rigs for direct streaming or tie-up with the likes of Nvidia and AMD to stream games to even those players who haven’t been able to upgrade to a new, more expensive rig in years.
