Yesterday it was my one of the closest friend’s birthday and they were having a birthday bash at his house just like all the passed by years and I went there despite knowing that most of the people…
Have your 20-something old ass been shamed by a 40+ years old leader for being emotional and not thinking big/ thinking about company first/ from a leader’s perspective
or,
not being experienced enough and unable to see the bigger picture and asking too many WHYs
I have news for you, They are NOT wrong in the vocabulary of that advice
but what they ARE absolutely wrong in
I have been given the “golden advice” in so many ways over the many years in my 20s and every-time i asked WHY a project was shelved / why the particular leader’s erratic ways of working are tolerated/ why am I asked to adjust my mindset instead of being explained to me the bigger picture .
I am happy to report that I am on the other side of the bridge where I find the advice actually to be true for good leadership (however I still find snooty advice givers extremely wrong in shaming younger people for being passionate and a different points of view!)
This is the change in mindset I have noticed because of my experience/age and because I was aggressive and passionate about my ideas when i was younger!
The only reason I appreciate and acknowledge the fun i derive in solving problems NOW (at not so young age of 33!) is instead of wanting to prove that I belong at the table is because I once upon a time cared too much about proving myself and looked at problem solving differently and wrongly and I am so glad I made all those mistakes of speaking up when nobody else was, of bursting into tears in front of a CXO when the project I worked day and night on got shelved or resisting to adapt my tone with a specifically arrogant company leader!
So, please for God’s sake make those mistakes, Please be emotional , Please be authentic. You can only be a better you only if you stay authentic and true to yourself!
