Social Media

Social media is here to stay. It’s going to continue to be prevalent among children and adults. The population that uses social media the most is teenagers. When it comes to school counselors there are great ways to use social media. Creating a blog, Facebook site, and monitoring student welfare are some of the ways a school counselor can use social media. I like the idea of creating webinars for students and their parents. Getting out websites for students to go to for scholarships, writing help for essays, homework help, tutors, and general information. Using social media does have it’s cautions when it comes to social media.

Posting information on social media sites means the information is for public use. Teaching students about what this could mean not only for the day but for their future needs to be done. I’ve seen many students who post having a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. This is grounds for suspension or at least usage counseling. Many questions come into play when it comes to the ethics of counseling and social media. Check out the article Social Media and Professional School Counselors: Ethical and Legal Considerations for much more information on ethics and the role of the school counselor. All issue are extremely important as a school counselor.
