Meditation.

A personal experience

I know that nowadays everybody is talking about dieting, yoga, career, sleep and balance and how you should have them all in 24 hours. So I will not start with giving advices or tell you what you should do or shouldn’t in order to have the life you want. There are plenty of articles about that. I will just share my story for any of those who feel like they are in “black hole” and can’t get out; for those of you who feel like even if they have everything the society tells you should have, there is still an emptiness that cannot be filled. So let’s start with the word “meditation”. Oh, by the way, when was the last time you felt a complete relaxation within your body and mind?

So I consider myself one of the average people who have a job, a decent salary, a husband and a cat, therefore, pretty much ok if you see it from a general life perspective. And I should not be complaining, but be grateful instead. However, for the last months, I have been filling like I need to do more. Started thinking that I want something else for myself. And I am not referring to having more in terms of physical stuff — a bigger house, a better job etc. — but having more and feeling more when it comes to my body and mind. I realised that every morning I was waking up with negative thoughts, headaches, pressure on my shoulders, an overthinking mind that kept going on and on. So I had to start with something.

Little did I know that the solution was laying in me, waiting to be “unleashed”. One day, my husband mentioned about a colleague of his, who managed to change herself from being overstressed and anxious to a super calm and warm person, through meditation. Of course, at that time, I did not believe in such things as meditation or yoga, or letting your self go. But my husband insisted I should try it out and see how it goes. Thank him for that! Maybe he was just too tired of my s***. So I started listening to some guided meditation on YouTube, for several days and waited for “miracles” to happen.

Now, I am not a guru when it comes to meditation, as I have been doing it for several months now, so if you ask yourself weather this is more of a placebo effect or the power of words, I couldn’t be able to agree with you more. It might be both, it might be something else, but the focus here, is on the side effect. And that is something it cannot be described in words. To completely feel that your brain is practically relaxing and your body is flowing, is a sensation that deserves every minute spent on meditating. And again, I am just a beginner, feeling the need to share this to anyone who feels like is overwhelmed by the daily activities, daily chores and needs to do something for it self.

Meditation was the best thing that happened to me and I can’t believe the way it changed me. There is still a long way to go, but I feel like I am on the right track. We spend so much time thinking about others, about the way they see us, the tasks we need to complete and so little time thinking about the way our body feels, weather we are stressed or not, what needs to be done to feel more relaxed etc. We are living in a stressed world and forgotten to connect with our inner self. This is also the reason why I believe we need to turn our focus on ourselves and less on others.

Please start meditating 10 minutes per day, by finding a confortable position and be present. Simply listen to a guided meditation and let your thoughts come and go. Add this to your schedule and let me know if you felt any change after a week or two of practice. This is just an introduction about what how we can shift our attention from outside to inside. There still some other ways too which can bring some good changes in our lives. And I am talking about yoga or motivational speeches. But about that some other time.
