How much does it cost to live in New York city?

So you have heard all the stories about how expensive it is to live in New York city… And yes it is; but you decided to live here so you know what you got yourself into and every New Yorker has a way to keep the cost relatively low.

Like always with money and life, it is just about what you want to optimize for! You probably won’t get a big apartment, dine out every night, get fancy clothers and see many shows because you probably don’t make enough money so pick your fights and at least pick one and indulge!

I don’t have any proofs for this but New York used to top the “most expensive cities in the world” list a few year ago but comparatively, it feels it got much more expensive elsewhere (hello San Francisco Bay Area!). I don’t have any proof for this but at least for me moving to New York after having lived in San Francisco and Sydney felts like a steal…

I probably don’t have my number right but you should budget 3,500 dollars for a one bedroom appartment in Manhattan. Brooklyn (Williamsburg) is no longer cheaper so don’t move there because you want to save money.

Con Edison is where you will likely get your electricity and gas. You can choose another energy provider technically (but your bill will still come from con edison)from one of the energy service companies (ESCOs for short) but there are mostly only horrors stories about them so probably not worth the hassle anyway… Bottom line is that Utility customers who use 300 kilowatt hours of electricity per month — enough for a typical New York City apartment — pay an average monthly bill of $58.56 under the default plans offered by Con Edison.

I am a cord cutters and honestly if you don’t have shows to watch on Netflix, you are probably watching too much TV anyway! This can also save you a lot of money since you really only need the internet connection and no extra cable premium channels
