What can we each do daily for others is the question?

Nearly 20 years ago we received a distress signal from a fifty foot vessel capsized in the open pacific and caught in storm and eighty plus waves. A failed rescue attempt had already occurred when I and my Team was given the mission. It didn’t occur to me that the mast breaking and slamming into my head, being dragged under water, tangled in broken lines, and flipped over seven times as rogue waves tossed the boat over and over would have any impact on my body later. In my twenties, and now, I consider myself and those few that lived that day lucky, for those strangers that perished my heart goes out to them and their families. However, comically the blunt force impact and compressed spine occasionally reminds me of the fragility of life and our bodies. This morning I awoke here in Spain, alone, and unable to feel or move anything in my left left, the tingling in my spine and numbness in my right leg was equally frustrating because I couldn’t roll over the five feet necessary to at least make a coffee and wait it out. Under-caffinated it took a bit, but regained some semblance of functionality and carried out my day and am grateful. Had it not been for the military and the blessed mentors that gave the most precious of all commodities — time; I’d never have known the importance of service and sacrifice to something greater than ourselves — its about what we can selflessly do for others as citizens that matters. What can we each do daily for others is the question?
