Relax Your Problems

It would be great for things to be perfect, of course. And by perfect, I mean the optimal solution possible

When deciding our career, we want everything to be best possible one. When deciding our partner, we need them to be the best out of the lot.

But things aren’t always perfect. And it’s inefficient to always find the optimal solution. But if we stick to trying to find it, we will get stuck in never finding anything.

Instead we can take a page from computer scientists: relax. Specifically, relax our problems.

If we make our problem easier, we can perhaps find a solution that’s close to optimal. And it’ll be much easier.

That is why we say “If you could do anything, what would it be?” Of course you can’t do anything. But perhaps the answer to this question is better than finding what you would do when considering all the other factors of life.

Relaxation isn’t avoiding a problem. It’s learning to see that the optimal solution will likely not be found. And some solution is better than none in that case.

Be willing to drop some constraints and imagine a little bigger.
