What Does Toxic Positivity Sound Like?

Toxic positivity — have you ever encountered this behavior?

Do you sometimes have similar inclinations?

Even if any of your answers are yes, remember that toxic positivity is nothing that cannot be changed!

Toxic positivity is the tendency to overreact to bad news rather than allowing yourself to feel the real emotions associated with a given situation.

This behavior can be directed at other people as well as at yourself.

It is based on the belief that there are feelings and emotions that have a negative impact on us when we experience them.

Therefore, toxic-positive people try to turn them into the most “optimistic” counterparts.

Toxic positivity doesn’t help us when we go through difficult times; on the contrary, it spoils our confidence and makes it difficult to overcome depression.

First of all, it carries the message that some emotions should be avoided or even afraid of them.

Instead of dealing with sadness or anger, toxic positivity creates the belief that the way to deal with a given situation is to feel opposite feelings — happiness, gratitude, joy (even if we are not able to get into that mood at all).

A toxic person usually hides their true thoughts and emotions, tries to ignore unnecessary emotions, or feels guilty for what feelings they are experiencing.

However, when similar situations are experienced by others, he ignores them or comforts them, blaming them for the lack of a positive attitude.

Remember that we need every emotion and let us know that something is happening.

Anger can tell us that our boundaries have been violated. When we feel sad, we need support.

Emotions allow us to be in touch with each other, to maintain balance. It’s not worth running away from them. It’s worth permitting yourself to feel them.

Accepting your feelings and yourself as a human being, giving yourself compassion, being able to let go, and not sweeping your problems under the rug are part of caring for your mental health.
