Is BeReal training us just like dogs?

A brief thought about how the new social platform may be shaping our behavior for their next business step

We might say that BeReal just became one of the most popular social media networks on recent months. Defending a real-time, no filter, no ads and realistic timeline, the platform is now growing each day with users looking for a natural content and without all those algorithms, picture setups and manipulation that we can see on Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok.

Okay. Such a virtuous platform based on real life, showing people as they really are and without ads, is becoming more popular than ever. Hm.

And right when their push notification instructed me to publish a new picture so I could see my friends' posts, I had a brief insight about how trained we're becoming by using and following the app's principles. And I tell you why.

Now back to my BeReal thought.

How much of the actual process and operation of BeReal is training us to capture our attention and change our behavior whenever the notification pops up telling us to stop everything and post a real-time picture in a two-minute countdown? BTW: only by doing that we're able to see our friends' posts.

Doing that for days, weeks and months might change how we use BeReal in the future. And I ask you: how engaged and prone to absorb ads' messages will we be once they're introduced to the app? I don't want to use the word 'hostage' to express my opinion about all of this, but you can use it if you want.

We're living on a digital society where companies are trying to create new business models mixing algorithms with constant improvements followed by privacy and data management. But there's no free food.

Questioning our behavior using a new app may help us to identify ways for a better relationship between the modern world and digital media — and maybe help to develop a community less driven by companies that use our subconscious to achieve better results, more daily active users and money, of course.
