A Shy Developer Attends An Event

As part of my Career Success experience at Fullstack Academy, I was encouraged to attend meetups and events to meet other developers. I’ve always been incredibly shy, so I knew this would be hard for me, but I also knew that I had to give it a try. I’ve been getting better at solo over the past few years (I go to races by myself all the time), so I was hoping I’d do okay attending events alone.

After getting a few emails announcing the event, I decided to attend a Mapbox Live event in NYC. Mapbox is a mapping tool for developers that we used in one of our workshops. I thought that attending an event based around a product, rather than something that was just about talking to people, would be easier for me. The event itself was good, definitely a lot of interesting info and a lot of Mapbox staffers there to answer questions, but … I didn’t enjoy it.

I think there are a few reasons why I didn’t enjoy the event — here are the ones that came to mind right after the event:

While I didn’t enjoy the event, I did learn some important lessons that I hope to take with me to future meetups.

My first attempt at wading out into the world of developers went badly. But I’m okay with that. I learned some lessons, and hopefully my next attempt will be better. The important thing here is to keep looking forward — I won’t let this one bad experience hold me back.
