Your husband is dead? Long live your husband!

Dept. Sales and Customer support

Joe sat waiting for the phone to ring. Money had been tight lately, so his uncle had pulled some strings to get him entry-level work at the hottest tech company in the market. The new job mainly consisted of him answering phone calls, a simple job for which he would be getting ten times as much as his friends in Law and Banking. Convinced that he had hit the jackpot, Joe was motivated to do his new job as well as he could. He’d even heard stories of former colleagues who had worked hard and gotten promoted by the boss to one of the higher departments.

As he sat dreaming of getting promoted, the phone rang, interrupting his stream of thoughts. Picking it up, he spoke.

“Hello, this is Vueux Pvt Ltd. How may I help you today?”

“Hello, my brother told me to call on this number. I uhh”.

The lady on the phone sounded as if she would start crying at any moment.

“I uh, I accidentally shot my husband”.

“Can I please know the time and place of the accident?”

“Eight minutes ago, 182, 3rd Cross Road”.

“What are your names?”

“Cora and John Davis”

“How long has it been since the incident and have you told anyone?”

“Only my brother, he was the one who told me to contact you people. But my neighbors might have heard and called the police”

“One of our teams will be joining you shortly. Do not leave the house and don’t talk to anyone before our team arrives”

Joe cut the phone off and proceeded to fill in the new case details on the Company software. Within seconds, all necessary agents were automatically allocated for the job and he moved on to the next client.

“Hello, Veuex Pvt Ltd. How may I be of service today?”

“Listen, man. I just came home and found my father died from a heart attack. You’ve got to help me”

Dept. Operations

Their favorite thing about the night shift was the absolute lack of traffic on the roads. Within minutes of being assigned their latest client, Kate and Matt were at the required location. Finding the front door unlocked, they made their way inside the massive house. Matt looked around, admiring the expensive interior and furniture. He decided that he would seek out the house’s interior designer after today’s shift was done. His wife had just given birth to a second child and he’d been wanting to get them a bigger and better house. As he turned around, He saw Kate walking towards the client. As usual, he would walk around the house, noting down all the details they needed on the tablet while Kate would talk to the client. They’d realized early on in their career that things went much smoother if the first interaction with the client was left to her.

Kate looked down to see the crying mess that was Cora Davis. Squatting with her back against the wall, her eyes had gone red while a torrent of tears had drenched her pretty face. Not being able to hold her shock and sorrow any longer, she had probably dropped down right after the phone call to the company. Kate too squatted down on her heels. This brought them on the same eye level. Looking straight to make proper eye contact, she gently grabbed both of Cora’s hands with her own.

“Hi Cora, I’m Kate and I’m here with my partner Matt. I understand that there was an accident here and an unfortunate mistake was made. ”

Cora slowly nodded at her and spoke in a weak and feeble voice. “It was an accident, I swear. I would never do such a thing intentionally”

“I believe you, mistakes happen. Now just relax. We’ll fix everything”

“Is what my brother said true? Can you really?”

“By this time tomorrow morning, everything will be fine and you will be able to put everything behind you”, Kate replied smiling.

“Please, Please. I’ll pay whatever you ask. I’ll give you whatever you want”

“Right now, all I want is for you to take a few deep breaths and have some water”.

Gently helping Cora stand up, Kate proceeded to take her to the sofa. Matt handed her the glass of water, and spoke: “Mrs. Davis, for various reasons, our company policy is to collect the payment in advance.”

When the client nodded in approval, Matt selected a few options on his tablet and handed it to her. Pressing her hand on it, she spoke the words on the screen out loud, authorizing the transaction. That exact moment, Vueux systems automatically sent a briefing report to selected teams in each department.

Then, he placed a small cylindrical box on the table and motioned the client to wait.

After about fifteen minutes, a small vial of eyedrops popped out of the black little box. Kate took it out and explained.

“This has will make you fall asleep and start rewriting your memories when you’re unconscious. When you wake up tomorrow morning, everything will be back to normal and you will have new memories of the past 24 hours. Our team will clean everything up, dispose of the dead body and get you a replacement”

Cora nodded back. Like most clients, she wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible. Carefully holding her eyes open, Kate inserted three drops on each side. As Cora fell asleep, the last thing she heard was Kate wishing her and her husband all the best for their new life.

Soon after the cleanup department and transport department had arrived, Kate and Matt sat in the garden watching the sunrise.

“So, what do you think happened?” asked Matt.

Vueux guaranteed hundred percent customer discretion and followed a strict policy of not asking any questions to its clients. It had become a tradition for the two partners to sit down after every job, and discuss their theories over some smokes.

“I believed her” replied Kate, taking in a long drag.

Ashing his cigarette, Matt countered “Extremely rich husband and pretty wife. I say It’s a no-brainer. She clearly killed him for the money and lost it when she realized what she had actually done”.

He continued,

“And then there’s the corpse. One clear and precise shot to the head. Somebody untrained could never make a shot this clean unless they’d carefully planned it beforehand.

Kate did not bother to argue back. Matt had not seen Cora’s face with the close proximity she had.

Dept. Government and Police Relations

Unlike most of his colleagues in the department, Leo hardly used the company system when looking for numbers. Being an old fashioned guy, he’d much preferred the traditional alternative of writing down numbers in a neat little dairy. Many of his childhood years had been spent on perfecting his handwriting to make it as good as it could possibly get. He was certainly not going to let this small little skill go to waste. He flipped through the pages, looking to find the police representative in charge of the third cross road. A few minutes later, he leaned back in his chair and waited for Police Officer Brad to pick up the phone.

A few rings later, a heavy voice answered the phone.

“Hello. Police Inspector Brad speaking”

“Hello Inspector, this is Leo from Vueux. I’m terribly sorry for calling at such a late hour and disturbing you.”

“Eh, it’s alright. I was awake anyway. So what can I do for you?”

“Have you recently received any complaints regarding a gunshot near 182 3rd Cross Road?”

“We have. Multiple of them. Matter of fact, some of my men are heading there right now.”

“That house belongs to our client. Could you do us a favor by requesting your men to turn around and also see to it that the complaints never reach official records?”

“Of course, I shall see what I can do,” replied the police officer.

“Also, I would like the names and addresses of all who registered a complaint regarding this particular incident”

There was a moment a silence from the other side but Inspector Brad finally spoke

“I’ll have one of my men get to it as soon as possible and have it sent it to you”

“Perfect. Thank you, Inspector. That’ll be all.”

Like every other time a police officer got a call from Vueux, the following day when Brad woke up, he found a brand new bundle of cash stashed inside his mailbox.

Dept. Collateral Damage and Civilian Control

Roe hurried her way down the stairs to the first floor. She had spent the entire night covering the area and was down to having just one house in the area left. Her partner Robin was on leave resulting in the job taking much longer than usual. She’d just spent almost an entire hour on the family living upstairs. The TRAIT team was going to be here any moment now and they could not proceed until all other teams had completed their jobs. Eleana, her virtual voice assistant briefed her about the sisters that lived in the house as she repeatedly rang the doorbell.

A groggy young girl opened the door. “What do you want?” she asked in an annoyed voice.

Elena informed her that the young girl had been classified as a low-level threat by the Vuext Servers.

Roe subtly took a small metallic sphere from her pocket and squeezed it. It turned red. Roe murmured something to her Elena and asked the young girl.

“Last night, did you notice anything unusual?”

“What do you mean, unusual?” replied the girl.

“You know what I mean. Just answer my question” demanded Roe, desperate to not waste time.

“No nothing, I was asleep the entire night”

Elena went into lie-detection mode to read the girl’s heartbeat. She then confirmed that the girl was telling the truth.

Glad that her job had now become somewhat easier, Roe waited till the metallic sphere in her hand turned green and dropped it where she was standing. Then she started to make her way across to the other bedroom.

“Wait, what is this thing. And where are you going? Who are y..”

Before the young girl could complete, the metal object started emitting a loud high pitch sound that instantly paralyzed the young girl, causing her to fall down.

The elder sister was wide awake and on her feet by time Roe reached her room. Veuex had classified her as a high-level threat who had the potential to compromise the entire job. Like her younger sibling, she too angrily started spurting out a barrage of questions.

“Who are you?”

“What have you done to my sister?”

“What is that annoying sound?”

“What do you — “

Roe had no time for this. TRAIT would be reaching within the next ten minutes. She cut the elder sister off and spoke.

“Your sister will be alright, the annoying sound that you hear is specifically tailored to paralyze her. I had to talk to you and she was getting in the way. Now answer my questions and I’ll leave without harming either of you.”

Intimidated by the sudden outburst, the girl managed to whisper a quiet “Okay” back to her.

“Now, did you notice anything unusual last night?”

“No, nothing” replied the scared girl.

Eleana alerted Roe that she was being lied to.

“My assistant can detect your lies. DO NOT LIE TO ME” she finally snapped.

“I’m scared, my heartbeat might be off because of -”

“DON’T YOU DARE LIE TO ME” roared Roe. She would not have the entire operation compromised just because some twenty-five-year-old kid was trying to be smart.

“Okay, Okay Sorry”

“One last time. Did you notice anything unusual last night?” Roe slowly asked.

“I heard a loud bang around soon after midnight.”

Assistant told her that this was the truth.

“It was probably from the construction site next door”

Lie again. The girl was too smart for her own good. She was trying to add part of the truth in her lie in an attempt to fool the system.

Fed up, Roe took out one of the metal spheres that she had used and showed it to the girl in front of her. Activating it, she spoke “Target — Kimberly Moore is in front of me, begin configuration”

Then she looked Kimberly in the eyes and spoke.

“Your sister is lying paralyzed in the other room because I used one of these black little “Cacophones”.The one in my hand right now is downloading your genetic profile from halfway across the world. The moment it’s done and turns green, it’ll start to emit a certain frequency which will be nothing but a small nuisance for anyone for you. For you, it’s going to be terrible. You’ll be paralyzed head to toe. One final chance”

She got no response from the young girl.

Her cacophone turned green and with a sigh, Roe tossed it into the air and heard a sound which after all these years, had become too familiar to her.

Kimberly collapsed in an instant but unlike her sister, she was not lying still. She was shrieking and shivering like a fish thrown out of the water.

Roe spoke. “This is embarrassing. I kinda forgot to tell you something. This time, I tinkered around and made slight modifications. I changed the configuration from paralyzing to torture. So forgetful of me.”

Crouching next to the collapsed and trembling girl, Roe spent about a minute of watching Kimberly in agony and pain, She then proceeded to instruct Eleana to increase the volume.

Even though the loudness had increased by less than five percent, Kimberly’s palpitations increased threefold.

“Listen, you little shit. I am going to switch off this device for about a minute now. If you do not truthfully tell me everything you know by the end of the minute, I am going to turn the device on again and crank up the volume as high as I can. Then I’m going to go tweak the settings for the sound that’s paralyzed your sister so that’s she’s feeling as much pain as you are. Then I’m going to leave you two alone to rot.”

The moment she turned off the sound, Kimberly splurted everything. The previous night, she had heard a sound she instantly classified as a gunshot. She’d called the police but since they had not arrived, she’d taken it on herself and gone around the block to find a suspicious car outside the Davis household.

Elena confirmed that she was telling the truth.

“Is there anything else you have to tell me?” asked Roe.

The girl shook her head. She was quickly regaining her composure. Even Roe was taken slightly aback. She spoke.

“Change mode to ‘Paralyse’ and increase volume by 40%. Start ”

The device started it’s sound and Kimberly collapsed again, but this time she lay more peacefully and quietly. Roe gave out a sigh of relief. She had not wanted wished to continue the torture for much longer. Having to torture the little sister as well would have shattered her heart.

Roe took out a little black cylinder and configured it to produce two custom vials of eye drops. She programmed the younger girl’s vial to make her forget the events of the last hour and the elder sister’s vial to make her forget the little adventure she had in the night. Now that she knew what Kimberly had seen, she could synthesize drops to make her forget it. Within a few seconds, the first vial popped out. The memory it had to remove was fresh and recent which made it easier to erase than an older one. She made her way to the next room and inserted the drops inside the younger sister’s eyes. Before leaving, Roe tucked her into her bed.

Kimberly’s vial was taking longer to synthesize. Roe had no choice but to spend a substantial amount of her bank balance to speed up the process. The original ETA was 1500 min, about 1499 more than what she had right now. The moment the vial was synthesized, she made her way to Kimberly. After putting the drops, she spoke to a Kimberly who was on the verge of unconsciousness.

“You did well today. We respect loyalty and critical thinking. I’ll put forward your name to the recruitment department and have them interview you when you get older.”

Now that the situation had been resolved, Roe made her way to the nearest Pizza joint and devoured the biggest serving they had. She looked at her bank balance, which was now a shadow of what it had been an hour ago. Speeding up the synthesization process for Kimberly’s vial had turned to be even more expensive than she’d predicted.

“Bitch, you owe me big time,’’ she texted her partner Robin who was on vacation.

Dept. Target Retrieval and inter-timeline travel

Quinn sat outside the Davis household in his car, keeping watch over the house. He’d managed to get Cora Davis out of her house by calling up her office’s receptionist earlier in the morning to schedule a fake meeting. The rest of his team had made their way into the house the moment Cora’s cab disappeared off into the traffic.

Inside the house, Hayden and Colby sat idly beside a Mr. Davis who they’d knocked out cold within seconds of entering. Ashley was working on synthesizing the compound to rewrite his memory and Jonathon was working hard to fix the little black box that would let them leave this alternative timeline and go back to their own. Nobody was in the mood to fool around like they usually did. Hours of hopping around different timelines had made them all tired and exhausted.

None of them could figure out why they were having such bad luck with finding alternate universes today. On a typical working day, they found their target within the first three parallel timelines they visited. But not today. Every timeline that they visited, they found that Mr. Davis was already dead. After visiting the twentieth timeline, they’d even stopped keeping count.

“Ash, how much longer is it gonna take?” Hayden asked as he pulled out yet another bottle of beer from the fridge.

“Almost done, There are still a few things in Davis’s memory that I have to rewrite. This timeline only shares a 66% similarity to ours.”

“Wow, that’s low. But their beer’s better, you gotta give em that. Heck, it’s the best I’ve had in any timeline we’ve visited this year. Wish I could take a crate back to our world.” spoke Colby from far out in the corner.

“Amen, brother” replied Hayden. “And speaking of our sweet home, how’re things on your end, Jon”?

“Ah well, I should be able to get it working by the time Ash is done. We’re lucky that we finally found a John Davis in this timeline. A couple of timelines later, we would have gotten lost and it would become impossible for us to find our way back home. Recovery would have to spend months on finding us“ replied Jonathan, still tinkering with the black little box.

Hayden nodded. “We did get carried away. Heck, We probably visited more timelines today than some teams visit their entire careers.”

“Anyway, let’s get it over with and swap the body with our corpse. Come on, Colby.”

They headed outside to meet Quinn. Together, the three men lifted the large and cold cuboid box from the trunk of the car and brought it inside the house. Hayden lifted the lid to reveal the carefully preserved corpse of their universe’s Mr. Davis. Quinn and Colby carefully laid him down on the floor. They spent the next hour making it look convincing for anyone who walked in. They made sure that people from this timeline would never suspect anything.

By the time they’d finished, Ashley had completed rewriting alternate Mr. Davis’s memory. He would wake up a few hours later, completely unaware and oblivious to the fact that he was not in his original timeline, but in an alternate one. They’d kidnap this universe’s John Davis, leaving behind the corpse of the original to take his place.

Now that they’d finally completed their job, they all prepared to leave. Quinn would stay behind and join them later. His teammates wished him luck and disappeared back into their original reality.

He hid inside the house. Now all that was left was to wait for Cora Davis to come back and find the corpse of the person she thought was once her husband. As the hours went on, Quinn grew impatient. Minutes before his last stretch of patience finally ran out, the lady finally entered inside the house. The sight of her beloved husband lying dead in front of her left her screaming. Before anyone could hear her screams, Quinn knocked her down with a swift strike. He fired off a cacophone to paralyze her and ensure she stayed down.

Now came the important part. Quinn sat down to synthesize the vial of drops that would rewrite Cora’s memories. He pondered which narrative he should go for. He could make her believe that her husband killed himself in front of her, or make her believe that she herself “accidentally” shot him down. There were so many options. He spent a few minutes thinking and then proceeded to synthesize the compound.

A few moments later, Cora Davis woke up with brand new memories. Relieved that the job was finally over, Quinn prepared to head back to his own universe. Cora was frantically pacing around, waiting for her brother to pick up the phone. A few minutes later, Quinn disappeared back into his own timeline. The last thing he heard in that universe was Cora Davis dialing a number given to her by her brother. A number for an organization who could supposedly get her husband back. The people from the organization would travel to an alternate timeline and kidnap a version of him that never died. They would brainwash him to forget his original timeline and even brainwash her to forget the entire experience, no matter how many times it happened.
