Finding a good therapist is like dating. Except harder because if you’re new to therapy, you don’t even know what you want out of your future partner … er, mental health provider. Here are 3 tips to finding the therapist for you:
Don’t ask your friends if you can see their therapist. Instead, ask your friend if you can reach out to their therapist for any recommendations.
This gives your friend the opportunity to recommend you to their own therapist if they’re comfortable doing so, or an easy out if they’re not. If your friend gets along well with their therapist, it’s likely that therapist has colleagues or therapist friends who have a similar demeanor and style. Like a happy married couple setting up their two single friends, never underestimate the power of second-degree connections.
