Funny Things Happen To Us On The Way To Old Age

Okay, some of them aren’t so funny, well maybe a little

As we get older funny things happen to us — okay some things aren’t so funny but they happen whether we want them to or not. Well, maybe they’re a little funny.

Think about your parents and grandparents, then stand in front of the mirror and take a really good look — what do you see — be honest?

Here are just a few of the things I’ve noticed as a result of getting older.

If you’re like me you deny it, claiming that you’re your own “man” or “woman”, but you know it’s a lie. My wife sometimes jokingly (though not really) calls me by my father’s name. Of course, I threw out the “I’m my own man, I’m not my father” line.

Deep down, I know she is right. I walk as he does, make the same hand motions he does (we’re part Italian after all), I have the same speech delivery, and I’ve been told that we sound alike.

So go ahead, lie to yourself all you want, but I bet you are more like your parents than you’d like to admit. This is not necessarily a bad thing by the way.

For most of us, we’ve become so comfortable in our skin that how others see us, is of little consequence. At this point, we are who we are and there isn’t much we can do to change it.

This doesn’t mean we can’t change, it’s that we feel we’ve earned the right to do it on our own terms.

For illustration, I am a loud talker by nature. I could be in a store with one of my daughters, both in their 20's, and crack a joke or simply say something loudly and they get embarrassed. They tell me, “Dad be quiet, other people can hear you.” But does that matter to me — not even a little.
