Anybody Thinking Out There?

It’s not something we’re particularly good at

The world is a dangerous place even when you’re blessed with good genes. Good genes means your coding is so bulletproof that cells just keep reproducing perfectly like an aircraft that constantly rebuilds itself in flight. You’re alert. You stay fit. You’re totally immune to disease or even accident. You’re immortal (not).

That used to be a metaphor for America, an industrial and agricultural powerhouse of vast wealth with mighty oceans on either side, a Canadian arctic wasteland to the north, and a Mexican desert to the south, immune to attack from without and constantly rebuilding itself from within.

I hate to break the bad news but that’s not us anymore. It doesn’t matter how good your genes may be or how smart you think you are; there’s a streetcar with your name on it (not the one called Desire) coming fast on a collision course with your bod. Or a bullet. America is getting bruised and battered like never before. I’m predicting that her injuries will soon prove fatal.

The biggest problem in our society is that we don’t think, not that anyone should be surprised. Our education system didn’t teach us to be critical, analytical, or to make good decisions (or any decisions). It taught us to follow.

Politicians don’t want us to think because we might think about voting them out of office before they can do away with elections altogether. Or we might get the silly idea that they’ve been scamming us. Most thinking people will agree that we live in a society on the brink of collapse although they feel powerless to do anything about it.

I’m talking social as well as economic collapse, despite the smoke-and-mirrors statistics and relentless cheerleading. The banks may be too big to let fail, but your government doesn’t give a rat’s arse if you fail. Or die. It doesn’t give a hoot about the 13 marines killed by a suicide bomber at Kabul airport even as they were in retreat. What it cares about is the $2.2 trillion it…
